Special Guest Seminar

“Special Guest Seminar” is organised within the Business Administration and Marketing Department framework, by Dr Dorina ROȘCA. Each session welcomes a social scientist from abroad. The seminar has thematic flexibility and includes different topics from social sciences, assuming that all these topics are interesting for economists who, in a broad sense, are social scientists.

Dr. Irina SÎRBU, Higher Education Academy 

Listening and Counting the Voices of Young and Vulnerable

 
The session focussed on the experiences of vulnerable Moldovan children and families and AGENCY of those as voices or not in research and practice.
 
Dr Irina SÎRBU has a research background in child development and education, and child and family social work, focusing on looked-after children in the UK and internationally. She was a Senior Research Associate for a large ESRC-funded study. Currently, Dr Sîrbu is an Associate Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (UK).

‘Green’ Public Budget, Sustainable Development and ESG

 
 
The session discussed the green finance issues in France and Europe focussing on budgeting sustainable development and its impact on the environmental, social and corporate governance.
 
Prof. Mstislav AFANASIEV is specialised in public finances analysis, taking a broad interest in the “green” finance issues. He authored several peer-reviewed papers and books on sustainable development and ESG topic.

Parcel Vans Embodying Connectedness in Moldovan Transnational Life

 
 
The session discussed the cultural, emotional and economic implications of the parcel vans exchange between Moldovan emigres in the UK and their families from their home country.  
 

Dr. Sanda CARACENTEV is an anthropologist coming from a social and cultural backgrounds and entrepreneurship. She has been teaching at UCL seminars in material culture, currently specialising in the transnational practices in staying in touch in the face of adversity.

Prof. Bernard CHAVANCE, University Paris Diderot 

Janos Kornai and the “System Paradigm”: Comparative Theories of Socialism and Capitalism

 
 
The session discussed the work of the greatest contemporary economist, Janos Kornai, who passed away in October 2021, leaving us a rich intellectual legacy on the Shortage Economy, Socialism and Capitalism.  
 

Prof. Bernard CHAVANCE is an institutionalist economist, Emeritus at the University Paris Diderot (France). He dedicated all his academic career to studying socialist and post-socialist economies, focussing today on the Chinese economic system.
